The oil and gas sector has traditionally relied on reliable batteries that can safely shut down plant operations in the event of an incident. These batteries safeguard the control technology of oil refineries, gas pressure control stations, and offshore platforms, providing energy to ensure that these systems function properly. However, strict safety regulations are imposed on such operations due to the highly flammable nature of the materials handled, which can pose a threat to both human life and the environment.

Today, both onshore and offshore oil and gas operations typically use sealed and vented stationary lead-acid batteries, while nickel-cadmium batteries are employed in regions with extreme temperature conditions, especially in offshore installations. Given the limited space available on drilling platforms, batteries with a small footprint are increasingly utilised.

To decrease their carbon footprint, enhance operational efficiency, and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, oil and gas firms are exploring alternative uses of battery technology. Some other potential uses include:

  1. Energy storage: Batteries can be used to store energy generated from renewable sources like solar and wind, and then used to power operations when needed. This can reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and provide a more stable source of power.
  2. Drilling operations: Batteries can be used to power drilling equipment, reducing the need for diesel generators, and reducing emissions.
  3. Offshore applications: Batteries can be used on offshore platforms to power equipment and reduce the need for long power cables or expensive generators.
  4. Electric vehicles: Oil and gas companies are also exploring the use of electric vehicles for transportation within their operations. Batteries can power these vehicles and reduce the need for fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
