Benefits

BSH has a range of battery systems and solutions for railway vehicles, trams and electric buses. The batteries are designed to cope with the heavy load and are able to provide the energy needed to power the vehicle’s traction systems. Not only do railway vehicles need batteries to start the engine but like cars, they need to be able to provide electrical power for all lighting and controls on board when the engine is off.

Batteries for Starting Diesel Train Engines

Diesel engines in trains generate the power needed to operate the large traction motors that drive them. To start the diesel motor when there is no overhead power supply available, diesel starting batteries are needed. Not only will these batteries start the engine but they can be utilised in the driver’s cabin to power any emergency equipment.

Batteries for Train Carriage Lighting and Heating

Batteries are necessary for lighting passenger train coaches and will also be needed to power the water heaters in the cabins and the carriage toilets. These batteries are charged during train operation to ensure continuous lighting even when the engine is off.

The batteries utilized in these applications require shock resistance, meaning they must be durable and able to withstand minor bumps and impacts during travel without causing internal damage. To be suitable for the rail industry, these batteries must also have a prolonged lifespan and require minimal maintenance.
